A heavy rainstorm swept over the Catalan circuit on Sunday morning, setting the stage for a challenging second qualifying session of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine. Despite the adverse weather, the drivers faced a demanding session on a wet track, with Enzo Deligny rising to the top to claim pole position with a best lap of 1:53.250, his third pole of the 2025 season.
In Group B, which hit the track in full wet conditions, it was Pedro Clerot (Van Amersfoort Racing) who emerged quickest, securing a valuable front-row start for this afternoon’s final race of the weekend. The Brazilian, who stepped onto the podium in yesterday’s Race 1, was followed by Evan Giltaire (ART Grand Prix), who showed strong pace from the early stages of the session. The Frenchman edged out current championship leader Matteo De Palo (Trident Motorsport), who will line up on the third row for Race 2. Also performing well was Van Amersfoort Racing’s Japanese racer Hiyu Yamakoshi, who clocked the fourth-fastest time as he looks to bounce back from his DNF in Saturday’s race. Jack Beeton (Prema Racing) also delivered a strong performance, improving to fifth on his final flying lap, ahead of Taito Kato (ART Grand Prix) and Santiago Ramos (RPM).
Group A proved to be even more competitive, with a drying track and a glimpse of sunshine breaking through the clouds in the final minutes. It was Deligny who ultimately clocked the fastest lap of the session. A strong result for the R-ace GP driver after being forced to retire on the opening lap of Race 1 following contact. The French squad clearly adapted well to the evolving conditions, with Akshay Bohra securing the second-fastest time ahead of Michael Belov (CL Motorsport) and Freddie Slater (Prema Racing). Rounding out the top five was the third R-ace GP entry of Jin Nakamura.
The series returns to the track this afternoon at 17:10 for Race 2, which will run over 30 minutes plus one lap and will be broadcast live on the championship’s official YouTube channel and on TV, including ACI Sport TV (channel 228 on SKY) and other international broadcasters.
Enzo Deligny (R-ace GP):
“Even though there wasn’t much rain, the conditions made the track really slow and it felt like I had no grip, so it was tricky for everyone. Despite that, we managed to take pole by six tenths, which shows the great work the team did with the setup. After a difficult race yesterday where I lost my front wing and important points, this is the perfect way to bounce back. Now the goal is to finish the job in race two and try to win as many races as possible in the last part of the season. We’ve already won two this year, but with five races still to go I’m really motivated to keep fighting at the front.”
Pedro Clerot (VAR):
“Qualifying in the wet is always tricky, but today we showed very strong pace and I think we can be happy overall. It’s a bit frustrating to miss out on pole, especially because I felt there was still something more in my lap, but P2 is still a solid result. The track was constantly drying, which made it difficult to get everything together. Now we’ll see what the weather does for the race. Thanks to the team for the great job today.”
